Fundamentals of Radar Physics

Time:2026-01-19 15:03 Hit:2

To learn anything is to prophesy its shape, then understand its meaning, and finally get its god. So the physical composition of a thing or its form is the basis for an introduction.

Nowadays, the composition of radar systems is becoming more and more complex, but after the rough and refined, there are only five basic structures:

Transmitters, receivers, radar antennas, radar processors, indicators.

"Radar transmitters" produce short bursts of high-power radio-frequency energy that can be transmitted into the air through an antenna.

A "radar receiver" can receive echoes reflected from the air through an antenna and do some simple processing. For example, the primary processing task of the receiver is to amplify the received weak echo signal with low noise, otherwise the post-stage signal processor cannot handle this weak and difficult-to-identify signal.

The "radar antenna" can transmit the energy signal of the transmitter into the air, and similarly, it can also receive the energy signal from the air back to the receiver. Like the common pulse radar antenna is common to send and receive, so also need high-speed switching device to help switch the antenna "transmit" and "receive" mode of operation.

The "radar signal processor" is like the brain in the whole system. Its main purpose is to eliminate some unwanted signal clutter and interference, and to strengthen the echo signal generated by the target. At the same time, some algorithms are involved to make a decision on the echo generated by the clutter (interference) and the real target.

The "indicator" is actually a display device, mainly to give the tester an easy-to-understand image.

In this way, a radar system is already in shape!
